Dating Jesus

I too occasionally enjoy jumping aboard to bash Bill Hybels, 40 Days of Purpose, John Eldridge, Velvet Elvis bus. There is a time and a place to be sellectively critical of pursuits you think reflect culture more than Christianity. But at the same time these men and women have done great things for the kingdom of God. In a Christianity Today article 'Dating Jesus' the author was hyper critical of a renewed pursuit of women pursuing God as though they were dating him. Things like making date nights (kinda weird, but still very intriguing), having coffee and dinner while having a converstation with God (how is this different than praying and walking at the same time?), even occasionally getting done up before spending time in devotion and prayer. Well I say, 'Good on you!' How many of us, especially men, corner devotion and time with God into convenient little packages which usually make up the scraps of our time left over from the day. I can understand the voice of sarcasm, and even the voice of reason, but the voice of criticism for something so genuine . . . Maybe the author's just jealous that she doesn't have a date with Jesus this Friday.

Not that I have the same attitude as the writer of the article (which I don't), but the idea of 'dating' Jesus just seems a little weird to me. Maybe it's because of my past, but I, personally, wouldn't want to lower Him to being my 'boyfriend' (if I can use that term).

I don't know, but I don't like the idea that the Saviour of my soul (of my everything, really) could be somehow connected with that... It's just so easy to take that whole thing the wrong way.

And what about guys? Can Jesus be your girlfriend?

Am I the only one that thinks this, or am I just overreacting?
