Although, he does make a comment about like the Jesus Christ presented to him in his Sunday school class. He just makes a generalization about Christians hating gays because we don't accept the lifestyle as one in line with God's plan.

Who's actually being intolerant here?

What is most difficult about this article is trying to understand what Elton John means by the word 'religion'. The word 'religion' is a term that many people use in many different ways - it's a very charged word for some people. As such, how I would use to the word 'religion' would be different than how he uses it. How is anyone supposed to understand his issue if he doesn't explain himself in a way that readers can understand?
Just because Elton John thinks that "Religion promotes the hatred and spite against gays" doesn't mean that statement is true. I understand that he's frustrated with the people who use religion as an excuse to segregate and hate people, but people have been making excuses to segregate and hate others for centuries.
The biggest thing I noticed about this article was that Elton John seems to be pointing the finger at everyone and yet, at the same time, at no one at all. His statements are far too ambiguous - Who should ban organized religion? Why should musicians come together? What religion promotes hatred and spite against gays, and why? And if there are so many "who are gay and love their religion", and if their religion is an organized religion, then why should organized religion be banned?
I'll end with this - from his vague statements to his ambiguous wording, Elton John hasn't thought his issue, nor his arguement, completely through.

Personally I wouldn't prescribe to any religion. The instant your faith/church/god turns into mere 'religion' get out while you can and watch TV like a slug. Religion is a boring and useless structure created by humanity. I'll sign up for a living and breathing community of faithful believers who draw together by an equally alive and vibrant God.

What is banning organized religion going to solve? People are going still be opposed to homosexuality regardless of banning organized religion.

Well people don't have any recollection of 'source' of views. To most, the source of intolerance is bred from behind the pulpit. Alot of the time this is true unfortunately. You could take this discussion all the way back to morality, where they originate, as having a single moral giver. If you have morals, then you must have a giver of these morals no?
