The ‘Good’ Book Tres Risque in Sweden

I am the Sweeede! Recall the Veggie Tales episode? Well it appears a new way to present the OT text is picking up steam in Sweden. A risque magazine style Bible edition has been released with alarming success.

Sexy Bible in Sweden

Good Book

When this magazine (literally a magazine version of the OT texts) starts selling around 1/2 of total Bible sales, we should take notice. It makes sense that someone would want to take the text and present it into a form that speaks to a particular audience. Of course, the topless man on the beach is not for everyone.

This is really interesting - ironically it's right up my alley (studies wise).

Let's face it - people judge a book by it's cover, and Söderberg is trying to appeal to people today - but what he's assuming (BIG assumption here) is that people like to read pull-quotes and columned text and whatnot - which may be the case for some, but definately not for all. Will this format appeal to a younger, fast-paced audience? I think people that are scared to bring their bibles out in public might bring this one, if non other. After all, Söderberg did his job - it DEFINATELY doesn't look like any Bible I've ever come across, and all I can see is the cover!

The thing is, a magazine is a format that comes with assumptions and expectations because of what it is - is this good or bad, I don't know.

What I really want to know is what Söderberg's trying to say with pictures of sensual kisses and male models...and how they could POSSIBLY relate to the text they're surrounded by.

Them crazy Sweddish designers...well, if he wants too start a buzz, this is certainly an interesting way of doing it... I wonder what the Southern Baptists will have to say about this o__O
