Little Mosque on the Prairie

This new CBC show exploring the life of Muslim's in the small prairie town of Mercy earned itself an introduction on the front page of the BBC News website.  It has also earned quite a bit of interest from other American broadcasters and the possibility of infusing some Muslim humour into prime time television.
I just finished watching the shows premier episode and I must agree with John Doyle from the Globe and Mail that if anything the show is very Canadian and very hokey.  The terrorist suspecting character Joe was especially hokey, although Yusef and the Iman do offer a possibility of some potentially diverse characters on the show.  If anything I'll reserve my judgement for a few more shows.  I think it was very brave and original for the CBC to attempt a show like this and could be a great infusion of humour aimed at the classic religious stereotypes only emphasized since 9/11 and the war in Iraq.  At this point I remain optimistic . . . .

I can't wait until Stephen Harper privatizes the CBC and sells it off piece by piece to the highest bidders. Any network that portrays Belinda Stronach as a heroine is only worthy of contempt.

I heard the CBC hockey announcers pump this nonstop. WTF? Never would this kind of publicity work for a 'Little Jesus on the Prairies'. People would be calling in and bashing baby Jesus.....BTW, as if small town ALberta would giggle at Muslims in the neighborhood. That place would be so fraught with implicit and explicit racism it would make baby Mohammed's head spin.
